Prof. Liu Qibin's Team Publishes Research Results in Top Journal in Field of Additive Manufacturing

Recently, Prof. Liu Qibin's team published a research result entitled “A Novel D022 Precipitation-hardened Ni2.1CoCrFe0.5Nb0.2 High Entropy Alloy with Outstanding Tensile Properties by Additive Manufacturing” in the SCI 1 top journal Virtual and Physical Prototyping (IF=10.96) in the field of additive manufacturing. The first author of the research is Wang Fangping, a 2021 PhD student in the School of Materials and Metallurgy of Guizhou University, and the corresponding author is professor Liu Qibin. The work was supervised by prof. Dong Chuang of Dalian University of Technology and Guo Yaxiong, distinguished professor of Guizhou University.

The research results present, for the first time, a design strategy based on the combination of total valence electron concentration and phase diagram simulation to design Ni2.1CoCrFe0.5Nb0.2 high-entropy alloy. The alloy has a stable and soft FCC structure suitable for printing at high temperature, and it can precipitate γ′′ phase with D022 structure at low temperature. The wall-like high-entropy alloy was successfully prepared by direct laser deposition. After proper heat treatment, its yield strength reached ~ 1005 MPa, ultimate strength ~ 1240 MPa, and tensile elongation was ~ 20%. Its scanning direction and building direction are homogeneous with the best performance reported. After the γ′′ phase was systematically analyzed by advanced characterization means such as atom probe, the results presented the strengthening mechanism of this new additively manufactured high-entropy alloy. These findings not only promote the development of additive manufacturing technology in the preparation of high-performance materials, but also provide an effective way to further improve the alloy properties.
