According to the 2023 Guizhou Province Government Work Report, GZU’s “Double First-Class” construction will continue to be supported. This provides direction for the university to give full play to its advantages, such as the main force of education, the main channel of scientific and technological innovation, and the main front of talent. GZU will strive to take on greater responsibility, make greater contributions to the modernization of the province, and open a new chapter of “Colorful Guizhou” on the foundation of the achievements of the “Double First-Class” construction.
In 2022, GZU achieved remarkable progress in various aspects. It added six disciplines ranking in the top 1% globally according to ESI, and 23 national-level first-class majors. It also added 14 national-level talents and one “National Huang Danian-style Faculty Team” selected by the Ministry of Education. Professor Hao Gefei was awarded the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award, and Professor Anders, a Danish expert, was awarded the “Chinese Government Friendship Award” in 2022. In terms of scientific research and innovation, GZU obtained the approval for 203 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 26 National Social Science Foundation projects, and 4 National Key Research and Development Program projects. As the first affiliation, it won 41 Guizhou Provincial Science and Technology Awards. The “National Key Laboratory of Green Pesticide” was officially approved for construction by Ministry of Science and Technology, and the joint construction of the “Public Big Data National Key Laboratory” at the university by the province and the ministry progressed in an orderly manner. The university also added a “111” Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base and a National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Base.
The Government Work Report emphasizes “adhering to the three-in-one integration of education, science and technology, and talents, promoting deep integration of innovation chain, industry chain, capital chain and talent chain” and “vigorously developing higher education”. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, GZU will closely study and implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and the spirit of the 13th CPC Guizhou Provincial Congress, stick to the theme of high-quality development, strengthen the Party’s all-sided leadership in education, comprehensively implement the fundamental task of cultivating virtuous talents, and seize the major strategic opportunities for development provided by various initiatives and policies, i.e., joint construction programs by the province and the ministry, “Double First-class Construction”, the new national document regarding the development plans for Guzihou, and the provincial policies related to “enhancing higher education” and “strengthening Guizhou University”. GZU will always bear in mind the interests of the country, serve the overall development of the province, promote the great cause of education, and cultivate outstanding talents. It will actively seek to establish professional doctoral degree-granting programs in fields related to new industrialization, such as energy and power, biomedicine, material and chemical engineering, electronics and information, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. With such efforts, it aims to cultivate high-quality, innovative, and practical top-notch technical talents to support Guizhou’s high-quality development, and to create a university that meets the needs of the people. Ultimately, GZU will shoulder the responsibilities to contribute to the modernization of Colorful Guizhou, and to turning a new chapter for Guizhou’s higher education under the framework of “Chinese Modernization”.
