From August 5th to 9th, the first Guizhou Science and Technology Festival was held in Guiyang, with Guizhou University serving as one of the organizers. This event brought together the brightest scientific minds, fostered innovation, disseminated scientific knowledge, while celebrating the latest breakthroughs in Guizhou's science and technology.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Song Bao'an, President of Guizhou University (GZU), emphasized the need for scientists and technologists to heed the call for innovation. He stressed the importance of aligning with national and regional strategic priorities, fostering high-level scientific and technological innovation through comprehensive, forward-thinking, major projects, and promoting the seamless integration of the innovation chain, industry chain, capital chain, and talent chain. This, he emphasized, is key to achieving self-reliance and self-improvement and to solidify Guizhou's expanding role and mission on the regional, national, and global stages.

In recent years, GZU has gained distinction with the establishment of the Key Laboratory of Green Pesticides and Agricultural Engineering. This laboratory, a national strategic scientific and technological powerhouse, is dedicated to advancing the cause of national ecological civilization, food security, and the sustainable development of agriculture. It is the only academic-style national key laboratory in our province. Additionally, the State Key Laboratory of Public Big Data, a collaborative effort between the province and the ministry, holds the distinction of being the first and only national key laboratory in the field of big data in China. In collaboration with GZU, it has published two high-impact papers in the prestigious journal Nature. Furthermore, in 2022, GZU secured 203 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 2 from the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation (overseas), placing it at the forefront of universities in the southwestern region. Notably, six disciplines at GZU are among the top 1% globally, according to ESI rankings, and the university's overall strength has earned it a coveted place in the top 100 list of major Chinese universities.

In addition, GZU actively participated in showcasing its scientific and technological achievements, expanding its exhibition space, and diversifying its presentation methods by employing interactive devices such as VR and robots. On the opening day of the Guizhou Science and Technology Festival, leaders at all levels visited the University's booth, where the secretary of GZU Party Committee and the GZU president provided detailed explanations. The university's exhibition of scientific and technological achievements made itself the most popular booth at the Science and Technology Festival. Furthermore, the Cutting-Edge Science and Technology High-End Forum, themed "Ecological Governance and Pollution Prevention and Control," drew significant attention as an important sub-event. This forum featured four prominent keynote speakers, including Liu Wenqing, Shi Bi and Ma Kejian, all academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineer, and Zhou Shaoqi, Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. They deliveredinsightful speeches and participated in in-depth discussions. Notably, Li Can, Vice President of Guiyang University, engaged in in-depth exchanges with Academician Shi Bi of Sichuan University concerning the construction and development of resource and environmental-related disciplines. Academician Shi Bi also shared the successful experience of Sichuan University in discipline development.

During the Science and Technology Festival, Xiang Changquan, Director of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, visited GZU on August 7th to investigate scientific and technological innovation. He hoped that GZU, as a hub for talent and a research powerhouse in Guizhou Province, would concentrate its efforts on building advantageous discipline platforms and work toward achieving nationwide prominence. Meanwhile, on August 6th, Hu Jicheng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and Deputy Director-General of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, highlighted the importance of “clean tea” (quality tea that is organic and pesticide-free) as the hallmark of Guizhou tea. Green control, he emphasized, is a pivotal strategy for enhancing the international competitiveness of Guizhou tea. Academician Song Bao'an and his team from GZU have long been deeply rooted in various regions of Guizhou, offering robust support in cultivating the reputation of Guizhou tea as clean and wholesome.

Li Jianjun, the Secretary of GZU Party Committee, affirmed at the closing ceremony that the university would seize the opportunity presented by hosting the inaugural Guizhou Science and Technology Festival. The university is committed to deepening reforms within the science and technology system, boosting innovation and creativity, and focusing on driving scientific and technological advancements. This commitment includes the steadfast implementation of an innovation-driven development strategy, the strengthening of fundamental and strategic support provided by science and technology, the fostering of greater collaboration between academia and industry, and, ultimately, contributing to the advancement of high-quality development and modernization efforts within the province.
