On August 22nd, Zhou Weijian, distinguished alumna of Guizhou University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, attended the 2023 “Personal Conduct, Fulfill Tasks, and Engaging in Academic Research” campus scholar lecture series & Orientation Education Academician's Lecture.

In the lectureheld at the East Campus Gymnasium, Academician Zhou discussed the strategic thinking on how China can develop a low-carbon economy. She proposed “Three Necessities”. Firstly, it is necessary to follow the basic laws governing the relationship between economic development and carbon emissions. Secondly, it is necessary to consider the national conditions that affect China's medium-term and long-term development. Thirdly, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of China's international pressure and responsibilities for carbon reduction. She mentioned that achieving low-carbon goals requires increased scientific and technological research, improvement of independent innovation capabilities in low-carbon technology, and implementation of “new technologies, new ideas, and new principles”.

In the administrative lecture hall on the East Campus, Academician Zhou delivered an academic lecture with the theme “Progress in Chinese Anthropocene Research” to faculty and students from the College of Foreign Languages. She discussed what the Anthropocene is, research on the Anthropocene, and the progress of Chinese Anthropocene research. She provided detailed information on the current status of Anthropocene research, including core research questions, challenges of the Anthropocene. She also detailed the progress made in China's Anthropocene research, through presentations on the advantages of conducting Anthropocene research in China, comparative studies of global Anthropocene strata profiles, and achievements of Chinese Anthropocene Research Institute.

Before the lecture, Academician Song Bao'an, President of Guizhou University, accompanied Academician Zhou to plant an academician tree in the “Academician Grove”. After the lecture, Academician Zhou visited the College of Foreign Languages accompanied by Long Wen, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Foreign Languages, Dean Zhou Jie, and Vice Dean Wang Xiaomei. They watched the promotional videos of the college, and Academician Zhou presented a plaque with the inscription “Broaden Your Horizons, Expand Your Mind, and Make Further Progress”.
