On June 6th, the Chinese International Education Foundation officially approved the joint application of Guizhou University and the University of Salamanca in Spain to establish a Confucius Institute. This is the third overseas Confucius Institute established by GZU, and the first in a European country for Guizhou Province. It is a significant breakthrough in accelerating the globalization of Guizhou Province and marks a new milestone forGZU in promoting international education and Chinese language education worldwide.

GZU attaches great importance to the establishment of Confucius Institutes. Since 2022, with the support and guidance of the Chinese Embassy in Spain, the Chinese International Education Foundation, the Provincial Party Committee and Government and the Provincial Department of Education, GZU has closely collaborated with the University of Salamanca to advance the joint application process. These efforts have been recognized and approved by the Chinese International Education Foundation and evaluation experts.

The University of Salamanca (Universidad de Salamanca) is the oldest and most prestigious public university in Spain. It is highly regarded alongside the University of Paris (France), the University of Oxford (UK) and the University of Bologna (Italy), collectively known as the “Four Great Schools of Europe”. Salamanca, the ancient city that emerged around the university, is the birthplace of Castilian culture and the Spanish language, and was honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Salamanca will provide a platform for its students and faculty to deepen their understanding of Chinese language and culture, and contribute to cultural and economic exchanges between Guizhou Province and Spain in the fields of humanities education, cultural tourism industries and the integration of information technology and education.

Up until now, GZU has established three Confucius Institutes and Chinese teaching centers in the Americas, Africa, and Europe.
